Opened in 2006 and now a firm favourite with young and old, the Birdwoods Sweet Shop is a traditional sweet shop ‘just like you remember’. Set next door to the Gallery, the Sweet Shop is a single room colonial cottage built from materials reclaimed from the old Napier Hospital.
Take a step back in time, smell the sweets and make new memories with your children... there’s a vintage cash register that goes ‘ding’, lots of special nostalgic tins, baker’s scales, teddy bears, bunting and, of course, rows and rows of sweet jars. Meet one of our Sweet Shop ladies (they all have to be grandmothers to work here).
Fill a tin, fill a bag, or just fill your tummy! Sit in the shade under an umbrella at one of the tables in the front garden to enjoy your bag of treats, test your skill on the stilts, have a quick hopscotch competition or have your photo taken in the traditional carnival cut-out picture frame. You cannot but love your experience in this little gem of a sweet shop.
