Tākapu | Australasian Gannet

$89.00

Meet the Tākapu | Australasian Gannet

The Australasian Gannet, also known as the Tākapu, is a large seabird found around the coasts of Aotearoa and Australia. Easily recognised by its white body, black-tipped wings, pale golden head, and long pointed bill, the gannet is built for life at sea and strong flight over open water.

Gannets are famous for their dramatic feeding dives. Spotting fish from the air, they plunge head-first into the ocean at high speed, using their streamlined bodies to chase prey underwater. They feed mainly on fish and squid and often nest in large, noisy colonies on offshore islands and coastal headlands, returning to the same breeding sites each year.

Each Australasian Gannet is handcrafted in Arrowtown by our Cheeky Beaks ceramics team. Individually shaped from white porcelain and carefully glazed, each piece captures the gannet’s clean lines and balanced form. Subtle variations in glaze and finish ensure that every gannet has its own character.

Suitable for indoor or outdoor display, the Australasian Gannet brings a sense of openness and coastal connection into your space. As with all Cheeky Beaks pieces, each one is handmade and one of a kind, with natural variations that reflect the making process.
