VISIT OUR CAFÉ

A very special place in the heart of Hawke’s Bay. Set in the countryside just 3km from Havelock North village. The original Birdwoods in Hawke's Bay has become a "must-see" destination and event venue, which has now become one of Hawke’s Bay’s most popular visitor destinations attracting over 70,000 visitors each year. Our Gallery full of treasures is housed in a beautiful old church hall on an expansive rural property incorporating a much-loved outdoor sculpture garden, a café and an old-fashioned sweet shop. Bike, walk, skate down the Middle Road track to our door - perfectly safe for children and dogs to visit!

Gallery

Housed in the original St Peter’s Anglican church hall, built in 1894 in Waipawa and translocated to Middle Road in 2004, Birdwoods Gallery underwent a thorough renovation to preserve its historic style. The gallery showcases a diverse array of New Zealand and African art and crafts, including textiles, collectibles, furniture, jewellery, basketry, and ceramics and assorted treasures. During the winter months we offer cafe seating amongst our treasures in the body of the gallery, with a large woodburner to keep it lovely and warm.

Sculpture Garden

Enjoy a walk through the extensive gardens which display works by the internationally acclaimed stone sculptors of Zimbabwe, as well as recycled metal sculptures by both African and New Zealand artists.

Sweet Shop

Take a step back in time into a one-room Victorian cottage, home to an old fashioned sweet shop ‘just like you remember’ with hundreds of traditional sweets to chose from.

Real Summer Fruit Ice-Creams

CLOSED FOR THE SEASON: Open during the Summer, a visit to our little roadside shop is such a refreshing weekend treat to enjoy a traditional real fruit ice-cream using only the best of the Bay's mixed berries and blue berries, along with banana and plums (when in season). As it is so seasonal opening hours are weather dependent, but definitely all through the summer holidays!
