Meet the Kererū (New Zealand Wood Pigeon)
Say hello to the Kererū, one of Aotearoa’s most recognisable and cherished native birds. With its iridescent green and purple feathers, snowy white chest, and unmistakable wingbeat, the kererū is a symbol of abundance, resilience, and the health of our native forests.
Often seen gliding heavily between trees or perched contentedly among fruiting branches, the kererū plays a vital role in New Zealand’s ecosystems. As one of the few birds capable of swallowing large native fruits whole, it is an essential seed disperser, helping forests regenerate and thrive. Unhurried and purposeful, the kererū moves through the landscape with a quiet confidence that feels both grounding and reassuring.
Handcrafted in Arrowtown by our Cheeky Beaks ceramics team, each kererū is individually shaped from white porcelain and carefully glazed to capture the bird’s rounded form and distinctive colouring. Subtle shifts in glaze reflect the bird’s natural sheen, giving every piece its own personality and depth.
Whether displayed indoors or nestled outdoors, the kererū brings a sense of calm, nourishment, and connection to nature. As with all Cheeky Beaks creations, every piece is handmade and one of a kind, with gentle variations that make each kererū uniquely its own.
